Stakeholder Involvement

An important objective of the e-Highway2050 project is to rely on the constant involvement of stakeholders from science and research, business, politics and society from the outset as well as during the process of drafting the Modular Development Plan of the Pan-European Transmission System 2050. In this way, the needs and interests of the various stakeholder groups can be taken into account, allowing an actionable pan-European development plan to be developed that will garner wide acceptance.

The networking of relevant stakeholders also ensures an essential exchange of knowledge: The stakeholders will be informed about actions taken, individual project steps and results and can continuously contribute their knowledge to the drafting process through various channels. The main channels of exchange between the stakeholders and project consortium are:

Workshops: During the project, a total of seven workshops covering specific subjects will be conducted. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or comments with work package leaders.
Consultations: Interim results from the project, including any specific queries about individual work packages, will be published on the website under ‘Consultation’ and are open for discussion.
The Electricity Highways Stakeholder Platform (EHSP) was established by the European Commission (DG Energy). The EHSP basically comprises national representatives and representatives from the relevant stakeholder groups. They are involved throughout the entire e-Highway2050 project and meet twice a year. The platform will also extend beyond the project's duration.
Besides publishing professional articles, the e-Highway consortium will regularly present approaches, methodology and interim results at external, third-party events, thereby facilitating a transparent exchange of information.
The first task of the project was to conduct a pan-European stakeholder analysis and develop a comprehensive stakeholder framework. Individual stakeholders and institutions, which were identified by the analysis, are kept informed via mailings about project news such as upcoming events and publications. The list of key and interested stakeholders will be updated throughout the project's duration and expanded with interested stakeholders.
The project website serves as an information and exchange platform. All stakeholders are invited to send their questions and comments to the project consortium via the contact form.

The Electricity Highways Stakeholder Platform brings together all relevant stakeholders and serves as an open forum to work and exchange views on all relevant issues related to the development of a future Pan-European Electricity Highways concept.

How can I get involved?

You can get involved via the website, consultations, workshops and an international conference.

A website will show the latest information on the project. Final and preliminary results will be presented there. In the consultation process and during workshops, preliminary results will be presented and discussed.

Opinions and feedback from stakeholders will be incorporated when finalising the results. What are the objectives of the e-Highway2050 Project?

The project aims at delivering a top-down method to support planning of the pan-European transmission network, including possible highways, capable of meeting European needs between 2020 and 2050. Further objectives of the project are to increase public acceptance of grid expansion, to optimise investment cost, to propose governance and regulatory aspects and to support standardisation of grid technology components to optimise future investment. The project aims to increase the acceptance of grid expansion by means of information exchange and consultation processes that incorporate stakeholder opinions. A portfolio of expansion plans will be proposed in which the 2020-2050 proposals optimise the investment costs over this period of time. Governance and regulatory aspects are being analysed to produce a set of proposals which will be reviewed by regulatory authorities. Standardisation efforts are focused on the optimisation of future investment with the support of the manufacturing industry.

What is the e-Highway2050 Project?

Eight transmission system operators (BE, CZ, FR, DE, IT, PT, CH, PL) and ENTSO-E, together with 4 associations of technology manufacturers, and 16 RTDs are developing and applying a methodology for the long-term development of the pan-European transmission network. Planning of the transmission network will assume a crucial role when it comes to implementation and realisation of the European single electricity market and the decarbonisation process over the next 40 years. The results will be presented and debated with the whole electricity value chain as well as representatives of all impacted stakeholders in Europe, thereby addressing the main drivers and potential barriers for the proposed grid architecture options. The project is supported by the European Commission via the seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
