WP8 is a dedicated research work package involving five expert laboratories (Comillas, ELIA, RSE, SINTEF, TU Berlin) under the supervision of the coordinator RTE.

R&D is performed to specify relevant methodologies to plan an Electricity Highways System, while addressing many of the challenges raised by long-term planning. Long-term planning is formalised as an optimisation problem, which in turn improves the scientific relevance of the long-term planning. The associated tools are specified. They are based on advanced optimisation and simulation methods which are investigated to tackle this very complex problem, having highly combinatorial features and taking into account the dynamic behaviour of the system.
