Swissgrid, Switzerland
As Switzerland’s independent national transmission grid company, Swissgrid is responsible for the safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of the country’s transmission system and its 40 interconnectors between Switzerland and the rest of Europe. As a member of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), Swissgrid also shares duties and responsibilities in coordination and grid usage for the cross-border exchange of electricity in Europe. Swissgrid currently employs 350 people from 12 nations. Switzerland is traditionally a transit country for electricity. While Swiss energy consumption accounts for only 2% of overall European consumption, 11% of total electricity exchanged between the ENTSO-E countries in continental Europe is transported over Swiss lines and 23% of all cross-border capacity crosses Swiss borders.
Main contributions to the project:
Swissgrid contributes to work package 2, work package 4 and work package 6. Swissgrid has a great deal of experience in the operation of the European network, thanks to its international dispatching centre at Laufenburg.
